I began this series of small paintings on paper while doing pattern research as an artist-in-residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT. These works are based on observations of the weaver’s draft notation, a diagram consulted by weavers to generate a textile pattern. In this series, I work within the structure of the grid (graph paper), symbolic of the x (horizontal) and y (vertical) axes of the loom’s warp and weft. I think about how the weaver’s draft notation becomes a universal equation of utility; a record of information; a referential and instructional guide that can be interpreted and translated anew.
